Do you know, how to use an action camera as a webcam? An action camera is a digital camera intended for recording, and so action cameras are naturally made compact and rough and are mostly waterproof.
They classically use CMOS image sensors and can capture photos in either burst mode, record a time-lapse, and record videos. At the same time, a webcam is a video recording device that stores or streams an image or a video in real-time or via a computer to the Internet.
Webcams are tiny cameras that can be mounted on a desk, attached to a computer, or quickly built into the hardware.
Webcams are not always available, especially while using computers. But don’t worry, an action camera can easily be used as a webcam. Though there are some specifications, you need to keep in mind.

Steps to fallow while using an action camera as a webcam
Step 1: Check for supporting pre-requisites:
The first step would be to make sure that your camera supports the webcam feature. Not all action cameras have the privilege to be used as a webcam. You must check for the elements in the instruction manual provided. Some action cameras also come with an inbuilt software that lets you install this feature easily.
Step2: Install software if required:
If you have some software CD available for your camera, do install the software beforehand. This way, you can easily save your time with just a simple search on the internet.
Step3: The USB connection:
A USB stands for Universal Serial Bus (USB). It works as a foundation of cables and connectors used to establish connection and communication between different peripheral devices and computers. Every camera has an inbuilt USB port and comes with a USB cable. You are supposed to connect the camera to your computer via the USB cable.
Do make keep in mind that all drivers need to be installed before this step. Otherwise, it won’t work. If nothing shows up on the screen after you plug in the cable into the USB port on the computer, try to unplug and replug again.
Step 4: The audio/video setup:
After the cable has been successfully plugged into the computer, connect the audio/video cable jack with the action camera. Could you switch it on?
You would now be able to video chat and use applications like Skype, Google Meet, or Zoom—all that’s remaining is to check that the application program or website has been set up with the correct input and output devices.
Step 5: Checking the setup:
Go to Start. Click on my computer. Click on the camera drive icon. If you can see the video capturing onto the camera, it has been successfully installed. Congratulations! For that, you need to go to Settings. Go to the Audio and Video section. As for the audio, the input is mostly your default system when you are applying earbuds or some headset, or maybe a specific microphone Example- JBL. If you are trying to connect to the onboard video from the camera directly, it will display by the name of your recording device. Output must be the default system; if you can hear some music or hear yourself on the microphone, you’re good to proceed.
Step 6: The AC adapter catch:
All electronic devices have different power consumption capacities.
If you are not able to go through with step 5, plug in the camera adapter. As the camera might need an AC power supply to work on. Sometimes you can get short off AC power and may not have an option for your action camera or camcorder, in which case an extra supply of batteries can also get you through a sequence of long-lasting days full of video calls and streaming. You get to charge the new one while the old one might be in use.
Step 7: Add microphones:
You can easily connect your earphones, headphones, microphones, and the computer using the correct size of jack. This provides better sound quality as well as clear communication between the two parties.
Once you plug the microphone in, a dialogue box appears. Click on accept, and you are good to go! The position of the action camera should preferably be above eye level. An innovative stand can be created using spare boxes or big books. Place a tripod on a pile of everyday stuff, and you have a unique position.
Tip: For the people using the AC adapter and a DSLR, the latter two options seem favorable and provide clearance for the socket wire and allow the action camera to stay on the designated level.
Step 8: Now, for the last step:
Set the camera up to the video mode. That’s it. You are ready to use the camera as a webcam now. For some reason, if the sound could not be communicated to the computer, try using a separate microphone instead. Now, set the camera 0.6 to 0.9m away from you, and you are all set. You are now absolutely ready to enjoy your new webcam.
Advantages and Disadvantages:
Pros of using an action camera as a webcam:
- Laptops or computers don’t provide fantastic image quality. You can easily upgrade your image quality by using an action camera as a webcam.
- You won’t have to buy a new webcam just for the sake of video calling purposes.
Cons to using an action camera as a webcam
- The setup process of the action camera as a webcam can be more complicated as different settings have to be precise.
